Identifying High-Quality Treated Poles for Telecom and Construction

The Backbone of East African Infrastructure
Treated wooden poles—primarily sourced from fast-growing Eucalyptus—are fundamental to Kenya's rural electrification, telecommunications infrastructure, and agricultural fencing. Despite the rise of concrete and steel, properly treated timber remains cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and incredibly durable.
However, the market is flooded with improperly treated wood that will rot or succumb to termites within a few short years. Here is how to ensure you are purchasing high-quality treated poles.
Understand the Treatment Chemical: CCA vs. Creosote
CCA (Chromated Copper Arsenate): This is characterized by a distinct greenish tint. CCA is highly effective against termites and fungal rot. It leaves a clean, paintable surface and is the preferred choice for residential fencing, agricultural enclosures, and general construction.
Creosote: Easily identifiable by its dark brown/black appearance and strong oily odor. Creosote is the heavy-duty standard for utility poles and telecom line supports because it offers extreme water resistance and longevity in highly hostile, damp soil conditions.
The Vacuum-Pressure Impregnation Process
Simply dipping a pole in a chemical vat is useless. High-quality poles, like those distributed by Bewama, must undergo a rigorous industrial process called Vacuum-Pressure Impregnation (VPI).
The poles undergo kiln-drying to remove sap and moisture. Then, they are sealed in a massive steel cylinder. A vacuum removes air from the wood cells, and the chemical preservative is blasted into the timber under immense pressure. This ensures the chemical penetrates deep into the heartwood, providing decades of protection rather than just a superficial coat.
Verifying Quality
Before purchasing bulk poles for a fencing project or an infrastructure tender, request treatment certificates. Authentic suppliers will provide documentation proving the chemical retention levels (e.g., kg of preservative per cubic meter of wood).
Whether you require standard 10ft fencing poles or heavy-duty 12-meter telecom supports, Bewama's network guarantees rigorously treated, long-lasting timber infrastructure.
